Alternative Plants for PEPSystems Applications
$340,000.00
Grant Value
2018-19
Fiscal Year
Description
Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) Enhanced Phytoremediation Systems (PEPSystems) combines plants with PGPR to increase the tolerance of the plants to biotic and abiotic stresses including contaminants, drought or excessive soil moisture, and poor quality soils. The current commercial system uses a variety of grasses with Pseudomonad bacteria. We will be studying the use of alternative, deeper rooting species, including alfalfa, and other bacteria species for improved remediation of salt, hydrocarbon and metals and for reclamation. We will also conduct research using PGPR and flowering/other perennial plant species to develop a low maintenance plant mixture that will be aesthetically pleasing and thrive on poor quality soils.
