Project Description
This project is part of Canada’s Women’s Voice and Leadership Program which supports local and regional women’s organisations and networks that are working to promote women’s rights and advance women’s empowerment and gender equality in developing countries. This is done by supporting activities building institutional capacity and promoting network and alliance-building as women’s rights and feminist organizations are critical agents of change. The Program also responds to the globally recognized significant gap in funding and support to women’s rights organizations and movements around the world. This project supports Guatemalan Indigenous women’s rights organisations that seek to empower women and girls advance the protection of women’s rights and achieve gender equality. This project is co-implemented by Oxfam Canada and the Tz’ununija’ Indigenous Women’s Movement a national organization in Guatemala. The project aims to strengthen the institutional capacity and leadership of Tz’ununija’ and its member grassroots organizations located in Chimaltenango Alta Verapaz Baja Verapaz and Coban.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved management and sustainability of local women’s rights organizations in Guatemala; (2) enhanced performance of women’s rights organizations programming and advocacy to advance gender equality and empower women and girls; and (3) increased effectiveness of sub-national and national (or regional) women’s rights platforms networks and alliances to affect policy legal and social change in Guatemala.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2022 include: (1) the use of best practices in governance and management by 16 out of a total of 21 women's rights organizations; (2) the participation of 16 Indigenous members of women's rights organizations in decision-making spaces at the community municipal departmental or national level; (3) the support of seven women's rights organizations for programming and institutional strengthening; and (4) the support of the Indigenous Women's Movement Tz'ununija' supported its core administrative functions and programmatic support for the 20 participating Indigenous organizations.
