Project Description
The project works to strengthen the evidence base in order to improve the design and implementation of gender-responsive climate change policies in sub-Saharan Africa and to contribute to the empowerment of women and girls as beneficiaries and leaders in national climate strategies. Project activities include: (1) running a call for proposals for teams of researchers and policy officials to conduct research on gender-responsive climate change policy options; (2) providing mentorship to selected teams in advanced research methods to analyze the economics of gender equality and climate change; and (3) providing training support to researchers and policy officials to understand communicate and use the results of this analysis to influence more effective climate change policies and programs.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved generation and communication of policy-relevant high quality evidence on the links between gender equality and climate change in target countries in sub-Saharan Africa; and (2) increased use of high quality evidence by government institutions to inform policies related to gender equality and climate change in target countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of May 2021 include: (1) increased the capacity of 54 African researchers (of which 70% women) and eight government officials (of which 25% women) in advanced analytical research methods; (2) increased the capacity of 39 African researchers (of which 64% women) and 13 government officials (of which 30% women) in communicating evidence-based policy advice to government officials through in-class policy workshops; and (3) launched a call for research proposals on gender analysis of climate change policies in Sub-Saharan Africa with 76 proposals received from 25 countries.
