Project Description
This project supports vulnerable communities in Holguin particularly women by improving their access to renewable energy (RE) technology and enhancing women’s involvement in the RE sector. Project activities include: (1) the installation of RE equipment expected to benefit women-headed households local and regional health facilities local child centres and local workers in surrounding agricultural industries; (2) developing RE gender-responsive academic curricula and learning material and enhancing the RE training capacity of women professors in three higher education institutions; (3) implementing strategies that encourage women’s participation and engagement as decision-makers in the RE sector—this includes strategies to increase women’s enrollment RE studies; and (4) working with Cuba’s Ministry of Mines and Energy to develop a gender equality strategy for the RE sector.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to renewable energy (RE) for women-headed households and vulnerable communities in Holguin; (2) increased technical knowledge of women in the efficient use of RE solutions; (3) enhanced RE capacity of women and adolescent girl students and women professors in higher educational institutions; (4) increased women’s awareness and interest to engage as decision-makers in the RE sector; and (5) strengthened capacity of Cuba’s Ministry of Mines and Energy to advance Cuba’s gender-sensitive RE strategy.
