Project Description
This project aims to return 1 316 girls and boys to a safe and nurturing learning environment by rehabilitating five elementary schools in Dominica. These schools were severely impacted by Hurricane Maria in September 2017. Project activities include: (1) designing equipping and servicing the five elementary schools to incorporate climate resiliency school safety and the gender specific needs of school girls and women teachers and school staff; and (2) helping the capacity of the Government of Dominica to respond to climatic events by providing climate risk insurance coverage through the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF).
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) five resilient and gender-sensitive primary schools are rehabilitated and reconstructed; (2) equipment and educational materials for students and teachers provide a modern nurturing learning environment; (3) awareness of and application of best practices to improve school safety and reduce the risk of damage from natural hazards; and (4) the provision of disaster risk insurance to ensure the continuity of essential services and institutions through Dominica’s recovery.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of June 2022 include: (1) paid two years of the Dominican premium to Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility; (2) completed four of the five schools; and (3) began the procurement process for the furniture equipment information and communications technology and pedagogical resources.
