Project Description

The project aims to improve the economic well-being and reduce the vulnerability of approximately 3 000 families in the departments of Sud and Grand'Anse in Haiti. Support through this project in coffee production supply chains is based on an agro-ecology and agro-forestry approach. The project is helping to restore production capacity restructure the coffee value chain and encourage better adaptation to climate change. The project also aims to promote the economic power of women and young people not only in production but also in processing and marketing. Training technical support and access to credit capital and production inputs are being provided and changes in social and political norms are being sought. Several intervention strategies including strengthening producers' associations and cooperatives are helping to strengthen the democratic and inclusive governance of the coffee production sector in order to maximise its economic social and environmental potential. The project also aims to help the sector adapt to climate change and supports applied research activities the strengthening of sustainable seed management mechanisms and the promotion/introduction of green technologies.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) value-added of the targeted agri-food value chains is increased particularly for women and youth in the targeted regions while respecting the environment; and (2) agri-food value chains targeted by the project are better adapted to climate change.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of March 2024 include: (1) provided inputs to 2 100 of the 2 600 targeted farms starting in the second year of the project’s implementation. This helped them to improve their average yield representing 80.76% of the target; (2) 80.76% of the target adopted new green technologies and innovative climate change adaptation methods. This represents 2 100 recipients out of 2 600 farms already reached; (3) 350 out of the 350 women and youth who attended the transformative leadership training reported having improved their leadership and negotiation skills; (4) 2 100 men and women farmers reported improved skills in the farm plan approach; and (5) planted 264 477 coffee seedlings representing 58% of the area converted to production methods that are better adapted to climate change.
