Project Description
The project aims to accelerate the discovery of innovation in the development and delivery of affordable vaccines for neglected livestock diseases in Africa and Asia. Activities include: (1) researching to engineer better and improve existing vaccines using the latest scientific tools; (2) developing products required before taking vaccines to the market; and (3) creating public-private partnerships for the manufacture distribution and use of vaccine innovations.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcomes of the Fund include: (1) increased dissemination of safe effective accessible and affordable vaccines against priority neglected livestock diseases; (2) new public-private partnerships that discover develop and deliver affordable livestock vaccines to market for commercialization and uptake at scale.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2020 include: (1) three calls for proposals were successfully completed including one call under each of its three streams of activities (Upstream – vaccine development; Midstream – vaccine improvement and production; Downstream – vaccine demand access and adoption); (2) 24 projects have been funded working on 16 priority diseases in 17 countries; (3) four women’s empowerment projects were launched focusing on women’s leadership and participation in the livestock vaccine value chain; and (4) a transfer of technology from Morocco to Kenya for a Pasteurella vaccine allowed an increase in availability from 0 to 125 000 doses.
