Project Description

The project supports Pacific Alliance countries (Chile Colombia Mexico and Peru) in strengthening their technical and vocational education and training and establishing strong demand-driven and industry-responsive training systems in the extractive sector. The project supports clean development and inclusive growth by collaborating with civil society and the private sector and promoting responsible natural resource management and commercial practices. Project activities include: (1) providing training for the qualification and employability of vulnerable women youth and Indigenous peoples on environmental management and rehabilitation of mining sites; (2) sharing best practices in Canadian and Pacific Alliance institutions on self-employment; and (3) organizing thematic forums to disseminate policies developed on themes common to all Pacific Alliance countries.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased sustainable dialogue among Pacific Alliance countries on policies guidelines and sustainable practices on professionalization of the extractive sector’s technical workforce and on equitable employment conditions in order to ensure academic achievement of women and men; and (2) improved beneficiaries’ employability particularly women in technical and vocational training (TVET) in some regions of the Pacific Alliance countries in the extractive sector factoring sustainable development.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved at the end of the project (March 2023) include: (1) reviewed 11 training programs within the beneficiary institutions of the Pacific Alliance (PA) countries; (2) delivered 23 technical missions including exchanges of good practices (9 took place in Canada); (3) launched terms of reference within the network of Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) members; (4) selected Canadian institutions to carry out their start-up missions in their respective PA country through four selection processes that took place in Canada (1 per PA country); (5) established institutional alliances in 4 countries and selected 7 Canadian consortia from the 23 submissions received (selected proposals took into account cross-cutting issues relating to gender equality and the environment); (6) delivered 4 Gender Equality focussed webinars and training sessions; (7) completed 4 thematic Forums on topics related to Gender Indigenous Peoples Education and Environment with over 2 363 participants from four Pacific Alliance countries (Chile Colombia Mexico and Peru ) including Canada; and (8) the Ministry of Education in Colombia carried out the first Technical and Vocational Training (TVET) promotion campaign reaching almost 300 000 people.
