Project Description
This project aims to improve democracy and gender equality in Honduras by providing support to the election observation process for the national election on November 26th 2017. The positions to be elected include: President three Vice-Presidents 128 Members of National Congress and 298 mayors. The project supports the Organisation of American States electoral observation mission to deploy 80 observers and experts (45% women) to at least 350 polling stations throughout the 18 departments. Activities of the electoral observation mission include: (1) monitoring the electoral process and recommend improvements to the conduct of elections to relevant Honduran institutions; (2) develop and share a report to increase the knowledge of electoral authorities about the existing challenges to the equal participation of women in the political-electoral system; and (3) conducting a quick count to verify the validity of the official electoral outcome.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (1) improved capacity of electoral authorities to carry out inclusive clean competitive and legitimate elections in Honduras; and (2) adoption of key decisions to address existing barriers to women’s participation in the political-electoral system in Honduras.
