Project Description
This project seeks to support countries in Latin America and the Caribbean in managing their extractive sectors through evidence based decision-making and improved regulations. Project activities include: (1) developing decision-making tools and information products; (2) supporting dialogue and efforts to influence the regulatory environment; and (3) providing country-level technical assistance to foster innovation in the sector.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved governance and competitiveness of the extractives sector; (2) strengthened economic integration of extractive activities; (3) improved evidence-based decision-making; and (4) enhanced stakeholder engagement effectiveness.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2019 include: (1) supported the methodology design coordination and oversight that enabled the launch of Mining Vision 2030 for Peru. The project launched by the President of Peru outlines sector planning for the next decade thus improving conditions for better sector governance; (2) supported the design and implementation of a data visualization tool for Peru under the campaign “Peru País Minero”; (3) completed the first Emerging Women Leaders Program for the extractive sector in Peru graduating 29 women from the private and public sectors; (4) created the Certifying Commission on Mineral Resources and Reserves in Colombia which enabled the country to become a member of the Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards in May 2018; (5) supported the Mining and Energy Ministry of Colombia to adopt the “Gender Equity in Mining and Energy 10 Guidelines” and published the action plan to further gender equity in the sector; (6) assisted in integrating the Human Rights Policy for Mining and Energy in Colombia; (7) enhanced the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Mines capacity on the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative and supported the publication of the second EITI-RD contextual report through the online platform “Portal de Transparencia EITI-RD” (www.eitird.mem.gob.do); and (8) published a study on stakeholder engagement best practices in extractives for five Latin America and the Caribbean countries with over 40 case studies in English and Spanish.
