Project Description
The project supports one of the three Canadian-based Indigenous Permanent Participants of the Arctic Council the Arctic Athabaskan Council in its engagement in the Arctic Council towards defending the harvesting rights and interests of northern Athabaskan peoples. This work aims to support increased participation by youth and Elders in the work of the AAC and partnering with the Indigenous Peoples Secretariat to promote the agenda of Arctic Athabaskan Council and the Permanent Participants generally.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) the rights and interests of northern Athabaskan peoples are acknowledged and incorporated into the work of the Arctic Council through Arctic Athabaskan Council’s participation in and consultation in the Senior Arctic Official and Sustainable Development Working Group meetings; (2) Arctic Athabaskan Council supports the evolution and strengthening of the Arctic Council to address issues of environmental protection in the circumpolar world; and (3) development of a five-year strategic plan that will guide the work of the Arctic Athabaskan Council at the Arctic Council .
