Project Description
The Teacher Education Support Project (TESP) aims to improve girls’ and boys’ basic education including reading writing and mathematics skills in Tanzania’s primary and secondary schools. It focuses on improving the quality and gender sensitivity of primary and secondary school teaching by investing in effective training for future teachers at 35 teachers colleges. Project activities include: (1) providing training to instructors and trainees on effective and gender-sensitive teaching methods; (2) enhancing the Ministry of Education’s capacity to manage teacher training nationally; and (3) providing teaching and learning materials to teacher’s colleges including information and communications technology equipment textbooks and learning resources. TESP seeks to help improve the qualifications of 3 000 college instructors and train approximately 50 000 new teachers.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved quality and relevance of gender-sensitive instruction for student teachers at 35 government teachers colleges; and (2) more effective management of teacher education and professional development by the Tanzanian Ministry of Education.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of December 2023 include: (1) supplied 1 120 desktop computers 1 420 UPS 70 printers 193 projectors 113 laptop computers 35 duplicating and photocopy machines 196 027 books with 557 titles and 593 Teaching and Learning aids for students with different learning needs to Teachers’ Colleges (TC); (2) supported professional development (PD). This includes 5 023 tutors (3 168 men and 1 855 women) completed Teacher Education Support Project (TESP) professional development (PD) sessions in their area of specialization 1 343 tutors (734 men and 609 women) on the use of ICT as a pedagogical tool and 20 tutors (16 men and 4 women) from 4 TCs completed TESP professional development in environment sustainability and green design for TCs. Also supported 1 225 college leaders management teams and board members (799 men and 426 women) to participate in PD in TC management and gender responsiveness and inclusion; (3) supported teacher education curriculum development. This is done through reviewing and adapting the pre-service teacher education curriculum for primary school teachers for implementation as part of system-wide curriculum reform; (4) constructed and completed of 1 new TC built 6 new libraries and rehabilitated 3 constructed 4 new ICT Labs and rehabilitated 3 constructed 9 science Labs and rehabilitated 6; (5) improved TC Management Information System TC Admission System and Learning Management System in use. Also developed and piloted Electronic Marking System; (6) supported connection of TCs to the Fiber Optic Network. This includes 7 connected and 19 in progress; (7) developed and implemented a Gender Equality Strategy for Teacher Education (GESTE) to ensure gender equality; and (8) developed and implemented an Environmental Sustainability and Green Design (ESGD) guide at Teachers’ colleges.
