Project Description

October 2022 - This project supports the Anticipatory Action (AA) implementing window of the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA). The SFERA enhances FAO’s capacity to rapidly respond to food and agricultural threat and emergencies around the world. The AA window of the SFERA will respond to global food insecurity by providing emergency agriculture assistance ahead of onset crises in countries facing high level of acute food insecurity. Project activities include: (1) interventions to protect the livelihoods of affected communities including cash and agricultural support and (2) capacity to strengthen risk analysis and early warning. With support from GAC and other international donors through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations provides emergency agriculture assistance. in countries facing acute food insecurity. This is done through livelihood-based anticipatory actions ahead of onset crises. Specific anticipatory actions protecting livelihoods ahead of shocks vary between country context and anticipated risk. Examples of livelihood-based anticipatory actions for agriculture include: (1) rehabilitating water harvesting systems and reinforcing river banks; (2) distributing conditional or unconditional cash transfers crop varieties animal feed and supplements; (3) protecting livestock including vaccination animal health campaigns and evacuation; and (4) diversifying livelihood.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) reduced humanitarian needs; (2) prevented potential food crises; and (3) strengthened resilience of vulnerable populations. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises.
