Project Description
This project improves food security and livelihood capacities in villages identified as priorities by the governments of Laos and Cambodia (11 in Laos and 8 in Cambodia). It improves skills of both male and female farmers in animal healthcare disease prevention animal management and food safety. The project supports productivity enhancement diversification of livelihood activities and marketing of products. In addition it increases the quality of veterinary services in communities by training and supporting Primary Animal Health Workers. This initiative is implemented in collaboration with the National University of Laos and Agronomists and Veterinarians without Borders Cambodia.
Expected Results
The expected intermediate outcomes include: increased animal health and management practices by communities in Xaythany District (Laos) and Ratanakmundul District (Cambodia); increased use of improved livelihood activities in communities; increased use of improved livelihood activities and animal health management practices by women in communities; increased capacity of stakeholders to support animal health and production.
Progress & Results Achieved
In Cambodia: results achieved as of September 2014 include: 345 people are better aware of human-animal-environmental health issues; 102 beneficiaries (58 women) are growing chickens and building their skills in improved livestock management practices; 203 villagers (99 women) in 7 target villages are aware of gender issues; 8 Farmer Interest Groups have been established in each of the 8 target villages with a total of 261 members (171 women); 8 animal drug vendors have been set up at the village level. In Laos: results achieved as of September 2014 include: 28 primary animal health workers supported farmers and were trained; 84 households including 78 women household representatives are using improved vaccination protocols for poultry; 12 model poultry farmers (7 women) continue actively to improve poultry management practices including vaccination; 8 model farmers (4 women) are growing crops and building their skills in good agricultural practices; 15 women have been trained and are active in edible cricket farming; 9 farmers have been trained in forage production; 81 students have received practical animal health training.
