Project Description
The Trust Fund in Support of Peace and Security in Mali through the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) provides support to Malian-led efforts to resolve the crisis and support the implementation of the Algiers Peace Process signed in July 2015. Progress in implementing key provisions of the Algiers Accord has been slow in particular due to continuing insecurity and armed resistance. Continuing instability in Mali has a significant impact on the whole Sahel region. The contribution of Canada to the Trust Fund aims to support the implementation of the peace agreement the restoration of state authority to the north of Mali reinforcement of social cohesion in view of reducing inter- and intra-community tensions improve the protection of civilians and contribute to the security of the north and central Mali.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) provide support to Malian institutions in areas including rule of law and security institutions mine action promotion of national dialogue regional cooperation security sector reform human rights and the initial Demobilization Disarmament and Reintegration (DDR) of former combatants; (2) facilitate activities in providing support to the Malian Defense and Security Forces and activities in support of immediate and long-term efforts by the international community to resolve the crisis in Mali encompassing security development and humanitarian issues.
