Project Description

This grant represents Canada’s long-term institutional support (LTIS) to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in 2017. This annual contribution by Canada is used to support the implementation of UNFPA’s mandate and its core functions. The contributions of all donors are publicized each year by the institution. Based on Canada’s annual LTIS contribution it is consistently ranked among the top 15 donors to UNFPA. UNFPA’s mandate is to support countries in using population data to develop policies and programs that reduce poverty and ensure that every pregnancy is wanted every birth is safe every young person is free of HIV and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect. UNFPA focuses on three main areas: reproductive health and rights gender equality and population and development strategies. Canada’s support to UNFPA contributes to increasing access to reproductive health developing development policies that take population dynamics into account and improving the status of girls and women worldwide.

Expected Results

The expected results for this project as stated by the United Nations Population Fund in its 2014-2017 strategic plan include: (1) increased availability and use of integrated sexual and reproductive services that are gender-responsive and meet human rights standards for quality of care and equity in access; (2) increased priority on adolescents especially on very young adolescent girls in national development policies and programmes; (3) advanced gender equality women's and girl's empowerment and reproductive rights including for the most vulnerable and marginalized women adolescents and youth; and (4) strengthened national policies and international development agendas through the integration of evidence based analysis on population dynamics and their links to sustainable development sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights HIV and gender equality.
