Project Description

This project supports the Government of Nepal's Housing Reconstruction Program through a contribution to a Multi-Donor Trust Fund managed by the World Bank. The Housing Reconstruction Program is rebuilding approximately 490 000 houses destroyed by the April and May 2015 earthquakes using earthquake resistant techniques. Project activities include: (1) supporting the establishment of the national disaster risk mitigation preparedness and response systems in line with global best practices; (2) providing technical assistance to trainers to train over 40 000 masons artisans and 5 000 engineers in earthquake resistant building techniques; (3) updating and disseminating earthquake resistant construction standards; (4) monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the Housing Reconstruction Program; and (5) providing housing grants for the reconstruction of earthquake resistant housing units. The implementation of the Housing Reconstruction Program is a critical component of Nepal's reconstruction efforts.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) strengthened capacity of the Government of Nepal in disaster risk management; and (2) strengthened capacity of Nepalese artisans and households in building earthquake resistant housing units.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of June 2021 include: (1) 13 760 beneficiaries (of which 50% are women) benefitted from direct housing subsidies; (2) 100% of intended beneficiaries were aware of project information and project investments; (3) reconstructed 3 200 improved houses; and (4) addressed 95% of registered grievances related to the delivery of project benefits.
