Project Description
The project aims to increase the income of 3 750 women in rural districts of Sindh and Punjab provinces by creating employment opportunities in road and community infrastructure maintenance. It provides employment and entrepreneurship skills for the poorest women in the community. It also builds partnerships between district governments and community organizations as well as key private sector partners to strengthen investments in road and infrastructure maintenance and to promote employment opportunities for poor rural women. The total budget for this project is $15.4 million. $5.1 million has been allocated for short-term employment opportunities to assist with economic recovery following the severe monsoon flooding in 2010.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2014 include: (1) 1 500 women from the Rural Road Maintenance Teams graduated they are now engaging in business ventures with 63% of these businesses generating average monthly profit of 4000-6000 Pakistani rupees (PKR) ($45-$67 CAD); (2) 21 self-help groups who are supporting group enterprises and savings systems were established; and (3) 2 300 km of rural roads were rehabilitated improving access between communities and markets. These results have contributed to improving employment and entrepreneurship skills development for poor rural women in select districts of Sindh and Punjab provinces.
