Project Description
This project aims to improve protection for lesbian gay bisexual transgender and queer (LGBTQ) individuals and communities across the Sahel against violence. Project activities include: (1) assessing organizational capacity gaps and implementing capacity building plans with existing organizations; (2) assessing work-related risks and developing and implementing security plans and crisis response mechanisms; and (3) training and funding existing Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) organizations new Lesbian Bisexual and Queer (LBQ) and trans activists and mainstream allies to provide recourse to human rights victims.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased number of LGBTQ organizations particularly LBQ and trans-led organizations that can support their constituents independently of the project’s resources; and (2) expanded avenues of resources for LGBTQ individuals and communities in Mali Niger and northern Nigeria.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of April 2024 include: (1) 20% of LGBTQ organizations successfully implemented security plans; (2) trained 4 LBQ women and trans individuals to assume leadership roles within their organizations; (3) trained 21 individuals from LGBTQ groups on documenting human rights violations and abuses; (4) trained 31 LGBTQ individuals on security planning and crisis response; and (5) trained 15 individuals from LGBTQ groups on providing paralegal services to individuals who have experienced human rights violations.
