Project Description
This project aims to address gaps in the human elements of sustainable biosafety and biosecurity across Africa in support of the Global Partnership’s Signature Initiative to Mitigate Biological Threats in Africa (SIMBA). Project activities include: (1) delivering diversity equity and inclusion in biosafety and biosecurity training; (2) delivering biosafety and biosecurity training; and (3) developing a risk assessment and risk-based decision-making tool for laboratory biosafety.
Expected Results
The expected outcome of this project includes increased capacity of the African workforce to reduce risks from infectious diseases and biological threats.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of June 2023 include: (1) identified 38 tangible interventions with associated performance indicators that support diversity equity and inclusion within a biosafety and biosecurity professional setting; (2) established a new undergraduate program in biosafety and biosecurity at the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology in Kenya; (3) developed a prototype tool for risk assessment and decision-making and tested it internally to support laboratories in applying risk control measures; (4) launched the 2023 global mentorship program with 29 mentors and 35 mentees; and (5) created 4 new national biosafety associations in Burundi Ethiopia Togo and Burkina Faso.
