Project Description
This project supports national COVID-19 preparedness and response activities in Kenya and Guatemala. Project activities include: (1) supporting infection prevention control; (2) disseminating messages on preventing the spread of COVID-19; (3) training health staff midwives and community volunteers; (4) providing inputs for handwashing solutions and water storage; (5) empowering mothers and caregivers at the community level; (6) sensitizing healthcare workers on Maternal Infant and Young Child Nutrition; and (7) supporting the inclusion of emergency prevention and response actions related to COVID-19. This project is implemented by Action Against Hunger Canada in Kenya in collaboration with Action Against Hunger Kenya Helen Keller International and the Ministry of Health. In Guatemala it is implemented with Action Against Hunger Guatemala Médicos del Mundo España en Guatemala Asociación de Investigación y Estudios Sociales and local government organizations. This project represents additional funds provided to a pre-existing project in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The expected results are the same.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased use of essential health and nutrition services by pregnant women mothers adolescent girls and boys; (2) improved nutrition status of pregnant and lactating mothers adolescent girls and boys; and (3) enhanced integration of gender sensitive health and nutrition services within local and national policies and plans.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved at the end of the project (June 2021) include: (1) reached 152% of the targeted frontline healthcare workers with training skills and knowledge on COVID-19 case management and infection control mental health and psychosocial support in Kenya; (2) reached 4 364 694 people (2 038 478 men and 2 326 216 women) with COVID-19 awareness messages in Kenya; (3) trained 460 people (125 men and 335 women) on the standard principles of infection prevention and control and water sanitation and hygiene that are necessary to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in Guatemala. This includes health care workers midwives female leaders and community members; and (4) provided 640 hygiene kits to families from high-risks groups in Guatemala.
