Project Description
This project seeks to strengthen physical protection measures for disused radiological sources in Ukraine. Project activity includes: (1) providing transportation and storage containers and vehicular tracking infrastructure to securely transport and consolidate disused and orphaned radiological sources from Ukraine’s temporary storage facilities to the newly built Vector facility in Ukraine’s Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Securely storing this material will should strengthen Ukraine’s ability to counter radiological security threats.
Expected Results
The expected outcome of this project includes: strengthened physical protection measures for disused and orphaned radiological sources in Ukraine.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved at the end of the project (January 2022) include: (1) provided 29 specialized containers for the secure transport of disused radiological sources from 5 of Ukraine’s temporary storage facilities to a long term storage facility; (2) supported system upgrades including a secure transport tracking infrastructure within the transportation control centers of 2 of Ukraine’s temporary radiological storage facilities; and (3) installed security upgrades to the tracking system connectivity on 4 transport vehicles.
