Project Description
This project aims to support the efforts of the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies to produce actionable information on sanctions evasion by North Korea based on open source research and analysis.
Expected Results
The expected outcome of this project includes: produced and disseminated detailed open source investigations into potential breaches of the UN sanctions regime on North Korea.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved by the end of the project (August 2018) include: (1) produced a detailed investigation into the Malaysia-Korea Partners (MKP) Group of Companies a joint venture affiliated with the sanctioned Mansudae Overseas Group; (2) produced investigations and analyses on suspected prohibited financial activities; (3) delivered research on active North Korean joint ventures that are in breach of UN Security Council resolutions; and (4) delivered 7 work packages to Global Affairs Canada and the UN Panel of Experts that provided extensive information on North Korea-related entities in the governmental academic and corporate fields that are implicated in UN sanctions evasion.
