Project Description
This 9 month project supports the comprehensive recovery of the population affected by the wildfires in Valparaiso Chile. Project activities include: (1) improving a comprehensive psychosocial support program for personnel involved in the fire response; (2) strengthening the capacity of local health workers to deliver a coordinated response of mental health and psychosocial support interventions with an intercultural approach; (3) improving the capacity of national authorities to implement differentiated mental health and psychosocial support in emergencies (MHPSS) interventions for outreach psychoeducation communication and community engagement with a focus on gender equality; and(4) improving the technical capacity of local health professionals and health authorities to manage and develop strategic information systems for MHPSS interventions.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improved capacity of national authorities to implement differentiated MHPSS interventions for outreach psychoeducation communication and community engagement with a focus on gender equality; (2) improved capacity of local health professionals and health authorities to manage and develop strategic information systems for MHPSS interventions; (3) improved comprehensive psychosocial support program for personnel involved in the fire response; (4) strengthened capacity of local health workers to deliver a coordinated response of mental health and psychosocial support interventions with an intercultural approach; (5) improved technical MHPSS support for monitoring and evaluating emergency response; and(6) improved physical infrastructure and equipment for emergency response.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (July 2025) include: (1) developed a National plan for mental health and psychosocial support in wildfire emergencies; (2) implemented a mental health support program for emergency teams; (3) organized 18 workshops on psychosocial support that beneficiated 505 participants; (4) realized 4 risk communication workshops involving over 60 participants from institutions including UN agencies fire departments hospitals and health services in Valparaíso; (5) produced 8 videos with practical emergency care tools; (6) trained over 150 municipal health workers on improving their response with an intercultural approach; and (7) acquired essential supplies to support emergency responses.
