Project Description
The project aims to help women and girls make progress on gender-based violence (GBV) exacerbated by the socio-economic repercussions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in Tunisia. It does so through a 2-year project valued at $2 million to improve prevention and response to GBV against women and girls increase public awareness to end GBV and increase the resilience of marginalized women and girls. Approximately 2 800 direct beneficiaries (vulnerable and marginalized women women micro-entrepreneurs women business owners specialized police units 5 Tunisian ministries parliamentarians private sector and civil society organizations) and 50 000 indirect beneficiaries (family members and overall population) benefit from the project.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improved prevention and response to gender-based violence (GBV) against women and girls provided by responsive institutions; (2) increased public awareness of the importance of ending GBV in Tunisia; and (3) increased resilience of marginalized women and girls affected by GBV.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2023 include: (1) trained 35 senior civil servants including 26 women and gender focal points from seven ministries. This training improved their knowledge of how to plan and implement public policies that take gender equality into account; (2) trained 40 civil servants from the Ministry of the Interior in handling cases of violence against women. This training focused on knowledge of the legal framework the rights of women victims of violence and best practices for dealing with women and children who are victims of cyber-violence; (3) enhanced the capacities of 45 senior civil servants including 10 men and 35 women who deepened their understanding of gender-responsive budgeting (GRB). The training notably enhanced their ability to prepare sectoral action plans for gender mainstreaming and institutionalization and to promote gender equality at all levels of the public budgeting process. During this training they developed gender-sensitive budgeting sheets explaining how to integrate gender into ministerial budgeting processes; and (4) accompanied 250 women artisans spread over six governorates: Tataouine Médenine Gabès Gafsa Tozeur and Kébili. This enabled them to move upmarket and diversify their outlets while highlighting the cultural value of their products as part of their ancestral heritage.
