Project Description
This project supports the development and implementation of a strategy to strengthen biosafety and biosecurity in East Africa. It does so through support for multi-sectoral collaboration and the development of partnerships between the Biorisk Management Association of Kenya the Biosafety & Biosecurity Association of Uganda African Union national government and relevant international partners. Project activities included: (1) identifying capacity gaps in biosecurity in East Africa; (2) delivering capacity and financial assessment of the Biorisk Management Association of Kenya; and (3) training and providing certificates to 40 professionals on biorisk management biological waste management biosecurity biocontainment facility design operations and maintenance and biosafety cabinet installation and use.
Expected Results
The expected outcome for this project includes improved partnership development and strategic planning for biosafety and biosecurity in East Africa.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2018 include: (1) draft strategic plans created for the Biorisk Management Association of Kenya and the Biosafety and Biosecurity Association of Uganda; (2) held certification and training exams in February 2018 for biorisk professionals from Kenya; 39 candidates took the exams of which 18 successfully obtained their biorisk management certification; (3) a new African Centre of Excellence for Biosafety and biosecurity was proposed in partnership with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the African Society for Laboratory Medicine.
