Project Description
This project provides funding to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to train personnel from the Malaysian Nuclear Agency to operate a mobile hot cell used for the conditioning and packaging of high activity disused sealed radioactive sources.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) 2 teams of 6 technicians trained to operate the mobile hot cell; and (2) conducted a peer review expert mission to assess the mobile hot cell for operations.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved at the end of the project (December 2018) include: (1) technicians received training on using the hot cell. This includes theoretical and practical operator training at the China Radiation Protection Institute in May 2017 and maintenance and repair training in Germany in July 2018. It also includes training on radiation protection when dealing with high activity sources; and (2) conducted a final International Atomic Energy Agency-led peer review of the mobile hot cell in November 2018. It concluded that the mobile hot cell is suitable and safe for the intended application and that the technicians are ready to engage in operations.
