Project Description
This project supports the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to conduct critical verification activities and destroy declared chemical weapons stockpiles in Syria. The OPCW established a Trust Fund for Syria Missions to ensure a reliable funding stream for their activities.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased accountability by state and non-state actors who carry out chemical weapons attacks in Syria; (2) improved accuracy of Syria’s initial Chemical Weapons Convention declaration concerning its chemical weapons programme; and (3) increased verification and destruction of chemical weapons stockpiles in Syria.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2018 include: (1) verifiably destroyed 25 out of 27 declared chemical weapons production facilities; (2) destroyed all chemical weapons declared by the Syrian Arab Republic; and (3) the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons conducted sample collection gathered information and published a report summarizing an alleged chemical weapons attack in Khan Shaykhun Syria.
