Project Description
This project supported the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) to address critical research and development gaps related to pathogens of bioterrorism and biosecurity concern. Project activities included: (1) conducting vaccine research and development against priority epidemic infectious diseases (Ebola Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus Lassa and Nipah); and (2) coordinating with vaccine manufacturers and regulators to advance vaccine candidates through the approval cycle.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project included: (1) increased global preparedness against disease outbreaks including those of deliberate origin; (2) strengthened global capacity to respond to outbreaks of unknown diseases; and (3) strengthened access to priority vaccines by low- and middle-income countries.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of September 2018 include: (1) call for proposals for priority vaccines against Ebola Lassa Fever Middle East Respiratory System Coronavirus and Nipah concluded; (2) call for proposals for innovative platform technologies to rapidly develop vaccines against unknown diseases concluded; (3) established the governance and operational structures for CEPI; and (4) held four partnership agreement negotiations with vaccine manufacturers launched for priority vaccines.
