Project Description
This project seeks to enhance the capacities of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries to detect and respond to emerging infectious diseases and other potential biological threats (including bioterrorism). It aims to do so through the development of a real-time bio-surveillance system (BioDiaspora). Project activities included: (1) developing the ASEAN-BioDiaspora application; (2) developing multi-sectoral partnerships with relevant stakeholders on animal health disaster management and security; and (3) developing project governance and sustainability frameworks.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased regional situation awareness activities and data sharing across member states through the ASEAN-BioDiaspora web application; (2) enhanced partnership engagement and integration within the region through the BioDiaspora Web Application; and (3) improved prevention detection and response to health-security emergencies.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2018 include: (1) completed core design of the Association of Southeast Asian nations (ASEAN)-BioDiaspora system; (2) provided 10 ASEAN Member States access to the customized BioDiaspora application to perform early risk detection; (3) 143 additional personnel received increased knowledge and skills to provide timely risk assessments and situational awareness reports to emerging events; (4) conducted more than 10 national-level policy interventions by ASEAN Member States to improve prevention detection and response to biological security or health-security emergencies; and (5) developed a sustainability plan to provide access to the web application by low-income countries.
