Project Description
This project provides professional services expert support and technical advice to member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the ASEAN Secretariat. It seeks to enable them to better prevent detect and respond to potential emerging infectious disease outbreaks whether naturally occurring accidental or deliberate in origin. Project activities included: (1) providing technical and scientific advice to ASEAN partners; (2) identifying ongoing opportunities for synergy across all of Canada’s funded biosecurity initiatives in the AEAN region; (3) ensuring the participation of Canadian experts in regional meetings; and (4) developing a strategy to create better linkages between ASEAN and African partners with other initiatives including the Global Health Security Agenda and with other regional and global programs and projects funded by Canada.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project included: (1) strengthened sustainability of Canadian-funded biological threat reduction initiatives in the ASEAN region; and (2) enhanced capacity of ASEAN member states to effectively implement and integrate initiatives funded by Canada to mitigate biological threats in the ASEAN region.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of September 2018 include the provision of professional services expert support technical and scientific advice to member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Secretariat to strengthen laboratory and response capacity for emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. They also seek to enhance biosecurity and biosafety Emergency Operations Center Network disease surveillance and regional interconnectivity capabilities. This resulted in developing a strategy to strengthen laboratory and response capacity for emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases enhance biosecurity and biosafety disease surveillance and regional interconnectivity capabilities across the region.
