Project Description

This project aims to promote the universal adoption and implementation of the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention. It also seeks to strengthen Latin America’s export controls and border security measures. Project activities include: (1) planning and delivery of a conference to engage parliamentarians in Latin America; (2) delivery of technical assistance for up to eight Latin American countries; and (3) development of parliamentary resolutions and bills.

Expected Results

The expected outcome of this project includes strengthened implementation of the BTWC in Latin American states.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of July 2016 include: (1) developed new biosecurity legislation in Brazil and the Dominican Republic; (2) supported 25 Latin American Members of Parliament from 12 countries to participate in the Global Parliamentary Forum to strengthen implementation of the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC) in Latin America; and (3) supported 25 Latin American Members of Parliament to endorse a plan of action to strengthen the implementation of the BTWC.
