Project Description
This grant represents Canada’s institutional support to the Office of the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) on International Migration. The SRSG uses these funds along with other donor funding to achieve her mandate. The SRSG for International Migration’s role is to provide the appropriate support to the intergovernmental process leading to the adoption of a Global Compact for Safe Regular and Orderly Migration. The core functions of the Office are as follows: (1) engaging in advocacy and provide policy advice on international migration; (2) coordinating the work of the UN system on international migration including for implementing the New York Declaration; and (3) leading UN system-wide preparations and support for the 2018 intergovernmental conference on international migration.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased capacity of the UN system to support and guide the inter-state process to develop an effective Global Compact for Safe Regular and Orderly Migration; (2) increased profile for Canada on issues of international migration through the support to a key office led by a prominent Canadian; and (3) enhanced Canadian contributions to key multilateral processes aimed at developing constructive approaches to addressing global migration challenges.
