Project Description

This project supports the improved access to sustainable and affordable energy needed to promote economic growth in the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region by improving capacities for energy planning and regulation across countries in the region and facilitating the dissemination and implementation of corporate social responsibility principles in the energy sector.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved planning management and regulation of the energy sector by national governments which includes work supporting regional energy integration and harmonization of regulatory frameworks and markets; (2) increased application of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices in the energy sector by national governments and the private sector; this includes pilot projects based on CSR best practices to promote sustainable access to energy in rural areas.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (September 2018) include: (1) the adoption of new or improved National Energy Plans in Belize Bolivia Dominican Republic Grenada and Honduras; (2) 22 national workshops on energy policies regulations and guidelines in 16 countries were delivered; (3) 706 government officers (of which 169 were women) were trained in the application of OLADE’s Energy Planning Manual and the development of energy plans; (4) technical assistance in 18 countries on gender equality in energy policies regulations and guidelines were delivered; (5) 36 energy authorities (of which 29 were women) were trained as “gender focal points” to provide guidance on gender equality within their institutions; (6) 121 virtual training courses (CAPEV) on subjects related to electricity energy efficiency energy planning legislation and regulation environment climate change hydrocarbons renewable energy gender and management were developed and delivered; (7) 31 971 people (of which 9 163 were women) were trained through the CAPEV virtual training program; (8) 6 countries assisted in meeting Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) membership requirements; and (9) the adoption of sustainable energy systems in 9 rural communities in Bolivia Guatemala and Guyana.
