Pakistan Floods - Emergency Response – International Rescue Committee 2022

October 2022 – Heavy monsoon rainfall affecting Pakistan since mid-June has caused widespread flooding that has affected 33 million people and displaced almost 8 million people. Reports show that floods have resulted in road closures power outages and disruptions to communications in multiple regions and the spread of water-borne and vector diseases. Over 1 700 people died in the floods and nearly 13 000 injured. Government authorities and humanitarian agencies have identified food protection emergency shelter water sanitation and hygiene services and healthcare as priority needs. An estimated 20.6 million people require humanitarian assistance because of the floods. With GAC’s support the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is working to save lives and alleviate the suffering of flood-affected people. Project activities include: (1) supplying medicines commodities and equipment to health facilities; (2) providing gender-based violence case management services; (3) distributing dignity and menstrual hygiene kits; and (4) providing cash assistance to highly vulnerable women to meet basic needs.

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) safe and timely access to gender-responsive health and psychosocial support services; (2) improved reproductive health education social support and resources for women and girls; and (3) increased protection from and treatment for consequences of gender-based violence. The expected ultimate outcome is the improved health and safety of women and girls and their increased participation and community influence during emergency flood response.
