Project Description
September 2022 – Heavy monsoon rainfall has affected Pakistan since mid-June causing widespread flooding that has affected 33 million. Reports indicate that multiple regions have been affected by flooding road closures power interruptions and disruptions to communications. To date over 1 300 people have been killed by the floods and nearly 13 000 injured. Rapid assessments conducted by government authorities and humanitarian agencies have identified initial priority humanitarian needs as food assistance emergency shelter water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services and healthcare. An estimated 6.4 million people require humanitarian assistance due to the floods. With GAC’s support the Canadian Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) are working to save lives and help reduce the suffering of people affected by flooding. Project activities include: (1) providing emergency shelter assistance including tents and winterization kits; (2) scaling up emergency health services such as medical care mental health and psychosocial support; (3) providing integrated assistance through multi-purpose cash livelihood and shelter support; (4) supporting the procurement and mobilization of in-kind humanitarian items; and (5) ensuring the protection of vulnerable people including through gender and inclusion programming.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improved availability of emergency shelter assistance; (2) increased access and availability of emergency health services; (2) improved access to livelihood shelter and multi-purpose cash assistance; (3) mobilized in-kind humanitarian supplies successfully mobilized to support flood-affected populations; and (4) enhanced access to essential protection and inclusion support. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
