Project Description
This project aims to strengthen the capacity of government and non-government actors to safeguard and promote the rights of conflict-affected and vulnerable children and youth in Colombia focusing on the Tumaco and Cartagena regions. In Tumaco the project addresses the rights of children and youth to survival development participation and protection. It provides training and support to government and non-government actors and builds their capacities in the following areas: (i) prenatal and post-natal services reproductive health and water and sanitation services; (ii) civil registration early childhood development and quality primary education; (iii) the participation of children and youth in decision-making as actors of change in the prevention of violence; (iv) awareness and prevention of and protection from abuse and exploitation of children and youth. In Cartagena the project focuses on the right of children and youth to protection. It provides training and support to government and non-government actors and builds their capacities in preventing the commercial sexual exploitation of children and youth and in protecting and rehabilitating children and youth.
Expected Results
Expected results for this project include: better access to prenatal and post-natal services reproductive health and water and sanitation services; better access for children to civil registration early childhood development and quality primary education; enhanced participation of children and youth in decision-making as actors of change in the prevention of violence; enhanced awareness and prevention of and protection from abuse and exploitation of children and youth.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results as of March 2016 include: 11 676 adolescents and youth improved their sexual health and nutrition practices; through training 88 civil servants were able to provide better attention and support to girl and boy victims of commercial sexual exploitation in the city of Cartagena; 55 schools implemented an improved teaching approach that includes a gender ethnicity and diversity focus that responds to the local context of the municipality of Tumaco. More than 6 400 children adolescents and adults have received training or were sensitized on issues related to child rights and protection making progress toward the goal of children and adolescents living in a violence-free environment where their rights are respected. For example more than 250 civil servants have been trained on national legislation on child rights and how to protect vulnerable internally displaced children and youth. Also more than 100 girls and boys victims of commercial sexual exploitation received rehabilitation services.
