Project Description
This project supports the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF). CERF is a humanitarian fund established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2005 to enable more timely and reliable humanitarian assistance to those affected by natural disasters and armed conflicts. CERF is managed on behalf of the United Nations Secretary-General by the Emergency Relief Coordinator and the Head of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). As a pooled fund CERF delivers urgently needed humanitarian assistance at the country-level both by kick-starting relief efforts immediately in a crisis and by scaling up and sustaining protracted relief operations to avoid critical gaps when no other funding is available. CERF funding supports time-critical life-saving activities and provides humanitarian assistance and protection to those in the most vulnerable situations including women and girls people with disabilities the elderly refugees and internally-displaced people. Project activities include: (1) supporting life-saving activities (e.g. food nutrition health protection shelter water sanitation hygiene transportation communication and other items of assistance; and (2) enabling more timely and coordinated humanitarian action.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) reduced loss of life through early action and response; (2) improved response to time-critical requirements; and (3) strengthened humanitarian response in underfunded crises.
