Project Description

This project provides funding to the Professional Development and International Cooperation section of the Nuclear Security division of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to provide a coordinated education and training program that meets the requirements of Member States.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) supported the Nuclear Security Support Centre (NSSC) in Chile; (2) provided radiation detection equipment to Egypt and Malaysia; (3) conducted needs assessment for NSSCs in Mexico Morocco the Philippines and Tajikistan; and (4) provided training to support a North African regional NSSC.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2021) include: (1) the IAEA conducted a National Workshop on Human Resource and Training Needs Analysis in the Area of Nuclear Security in April 2016 in Chile; (2) procured a range of radiation detection equipment in 2018 and 2020 for the Egyptian Nuclear Security and Support Centre (NSSC); (3) in Malaysia purchased and delivered a radiation portal monitor to the NSSC a pilot “train the trainers” course for front line officers on nuclear security detection was developed in May 2017 and was convened for regional stakeholders in September 2017; (4) an expert mission to discuss Mexico's development of a NSSC took place in March 2017; (5) in Morocco a French-language regional workshop on nuclear security was held in October 2017 to promote awareness of nuclear security and to enhance nuclear security infrastructure in Francophone African countries; and (6) in Tajikistan an expert mission on enhancing its NSSC took place in April 2016.
