Project Description

This project provides funding to the Nuclear Material Outside of Regulatory Control section of the Nuclear Security division of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to assist countries in establishing and sustaining nuclear security systems. This includes measures to prevent detect interdict and respond to criminal acts involving nuclear and radioactive material outside of regulatory control.

Expected Results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) developed nuclear security response capabilities in countries in Latin America and the Caribbean; (2) convened radiological crime scene management workshops in ten countries; and (3) procured radiation detection equipment that can be deployed in countries to secure major public events.

Progress & Results Achieved

Results achieved as the end of the project (March 2020) include: (1) a regional workshop took place in Chile in December 2017 attended by 17 participants from five countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to review national capabilities to respond to nuclear security events and develop action plans to address identified gaps; (2) follow-up national workshops in Argentina Bolivia Colombia Cuba Ecuador and Panama took place between 2018 and 2020 addressed national gaps in radiological crime scene management. This included training and the provision of radiation detection equipment and a workshop on responding to nuclear security events in October 2018; (3) a total of 217 participants from eight countries attended national workshops on radiological crime scene management held between 2016 and 2018; and (4) procured 56 pieces of radiation detection equipment that were loaned to requesting states for 16 major public events in 2018 and 2019.
