Project Description
This project provides funding to the Materials and Facilities section of the Nuclear Security division of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to support establishing and sustaining security systems for nuclear and radioactive material in use in storage during transport and for associated facilities.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) supported the development of nuclear security regulatory frameworks in 24 countries in Africa; (2) upgraded physical protection of nuclear facilities in Egypt; (3) provided training on the prevention of insider threats; (4) provided training on security management for radioactive material for countries in Latin America; and (5) removed three Canadian-origin high activity disused sealed radioactive sources in Lebanon.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2020) include: (1) 47 African countries received technical assistance on drafting and reviewing nuclear security regulations human resource development for nuclear security authorization and inspection of nuclear processes and development of Integrated Nuclear Security Support Plans; (2) implemented physical protection upgrades at the Experimental Training Research Reactor Number complex in Egypt; (3) delivered four national workshops and one regional workshop on Threat Assessment and Design Basis Threat in Colombia and South Africa in March 2019 in Honduras in December 2019 in Jamaica in November 2019 and Zimbabwe in October 2019; (4) provided training to experts in 18 Latin American countries on Security Management and Security Plans for Radioactive Material and Associated Facilities; and (5) removed three Canadian-origin high activity disused sealed radioactive sources from Lebanon in January 2018.
