Project Description
This contribution to the Sahel and West Africa Club (SWAC) seeks to promote regional policies to improve the socio-economic situation of the Sahel and West Africa populations. SWAC's activities include: (1) organizing forums and conferences between regional actors from the Sahel and West Africa and member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) on thematic and regional issues; (2) producing independent analyses based on the expertise of a broad network of researchers and partners on the Sahel and West Africa; and (3) developing strategies guides and tools for better regional governance. The project's beneficiaries are both policymakers from the countries in the region and donors who benefit from detailed studies and analyses to guide their interventions.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) more effective and better-coordinated gender-sensitive regional policies; and (2) more effective regional governance for food and nutritional security integrating gender equality and youth inclusion.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results acheived as of March 2025 include: (1) enriched regional debates with over 100 publications on priority issues (food security territorial dynamics conflict) including the report Urbanization and Conflict in North and West Africa and the Working paper on livestock trade networks. These debates generated more than 91 800 downloads; (2) coverage by the Africapolis database of more than 4 000 conurbations with more than 3 000 downloads in 71 countries; (3) analysed more than 60 000 violent events through the updated Spatial Conflict Dynamics Indicator (SCDi) and the CARTA platform enhanced with new data on conflicts mobility and green spaces; (4) 77 actions in support of regional dialogue platforms (Rendez-vous du Club RPCA PREGEC GOP) with partners such as WATHI Sciences Po and the Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (AECID); (5) supported 37 initiatives to enhance the inclusiveness of strategic dialogues via partnerships with civil society organizations think tanks and universities; and (6) strengthened gender mainstreaming efforts borne fruit: doubling publications with a gender perspective more than 38% of tools focused on women and more than 25% female participation in secretariat meetings. These results strengthened regional capacities in data-driven policies inclusive dialogue and gender-sensitive governance.
