Project Description
October 2016 – On October 4 Hurricane Matthew a Category 4 storm tore through the Caribbean causing widespread damage flooding and displacement in Haiti. Hurricane Matthew has resulted in the largest humanitarian crisis in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake. An estimated 1.2 million people have been affected. With GAC’s support the Canadian Red Cross is dispatching relief supplies from warehouses in Mississauga Ontario to support emergency relief operations in Haiti. The relief supplies are being distributed by the Haitian Red Cross Society to help meet the immediate needs of up to 2 000 families affected by the hurricane. The relief supplies include tarpaulins and shelter toolkits to help provide temporary shelter basic household items such as kitchen sets and hygiene kits (including soap and toothbrushes) as well as containers to safely transport clean water.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to temporary shelter; and (2) increased access to basic household items. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
