Project Description
April 2016 - A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the coast of Ecuador at 6:58pm local time on 16 April 2016. Hundreds have been killed thousands injured and over 700 000 people are affected. Over 1 500 buildings have either been damaged or destroyed by the earthquake. Most urgent needs are ensuring access to clean drinking water sanitation services temporary shelter food and emergency medical assistance for those affected. With GAC's funding this project will support the Ecuador Red Cross in their response including search and rescue operations to the earthquake. Project activities include: (1) providing trauma care first aid and psychosocial support; (2) providing clean drinking water hygiene kits and temporary shelter; (3) providing life-saving information to target communities to help them withstand future shocks; and (4) restoring family links for the affected population.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) the Ecuador Red Cross is strengthened in their response capacity including their search and rescue capacity; (2) improved access to trauma care first aid and psychosocial support; (3) improved access to clean drinking water hygiene kits and temporary shelter for people affected by the earthquake; (4) improved knowledge within target communities about withstanding future shocks; and (5) restored family links for the affected population. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crisis or that are food insecure.
