Project Description
This project aims to improve the quality of life for women men girls and boys in the Sahel region by strengthening the capacities of the Alliance Sahel’s coordination unit. Canada’s support aims to optimize coordination among the donors and development actors who are members of the Alliance Sahel. The project activities include the following: (1) organizing the governance bodies of the Alliance Sahel; (2) maintaining and developing relationships between full members and observer members; (3) producing relevant reports and data to monitor and evaluate the activities of members; (4) supporting the coordination of actions and the development of strategic partnerships on the ground; and (5) creating and disseminating content for the public to highlight the impact of projects and key themes of the Alliance Sahel.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improved structural and operational functioning of the Alliance Sahel; and (2) greater efficiency of development contributions from members of the Alliance Sahel.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of March 2025 include: (1) organized 13 sectoral and thematic working group meetings contributing to the implementation of the 2024 work plan around 3 strategic priorities: youth employment and training population resilience and territorial development. These meetings produced analyses recommendations and tools that were shared among members; (2) updated the Sahel Alliance project portfolio database listing 1 000 ongoing projects for a total amount of €22.8 billion. In 2023 €2.57 billion was disbursed including €650 million for regional projects; (3) strengthened monitoring and evaluation tools notably through the creation of a central monitoring and evaluation group in December 2024 which validated a simplified data collection methodology and began merging public and private databases; (4) 77 actions supported regional dialogue including 3 operational steering committees a general assembly thematic seminars (e.g. seminar on the Integrated territorial approach in Dakar) and consultations with partners such as WATHI and the Tony Blair Institute for global change); and (5) 37 initiatives strengthened the inclusiveness of strategic dialogues notably through the participation of 40 representatives from civil society and local governments at the Berlin conference and the organization of roundtables on peace social cohesion and women's rights. These results contribute to strengthening the capacity of stakeholders to implement effective regional policies to improve the economic and social well-being of the populations of the Sahel and coastal countries.
