Project Description
As part of its COVID-19 response window the Global Partnership Education supports lower-income countries to mitigate the impacts of widespread school closures on the most vulnerable children including children with disabilities and to build the resilience of education systems. Some project activities include: (1) providing hygiene and psychosocial support programs; (2) providing support for distance learning initiatives including learning materials textbooks and support to teachers in distance and remedial learning programs; and (3) establishing preparations for the safe reopening of schools and education spaces. The Global Partnership Education is helping sustain learning for up to 355 million children in 66 partner countries over 12 to 18 months.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased equitable access for children and youth to safe quality and inclusive education and learning opportunities; and (2) enhanced education system planning and resiliency strategies to respond to COVID-19 at the country level.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) through the support of the Government of Canada and other international donors as of April 2022 include: (1) supported 70.64 million children (including 33.31 million girls) and 610 000 teachers with distance and home-based learning programs; (2) provided 11.89 million children (including 5.76 million girls) with school meals nutrition programs and hygiene and sanitation kits; (3) reached 34.55 million children (including 17 million girls) with sensitization campaigns to minimize the psychosocial impact of the pandemic gender-based violence and unequal social norms due to school closure; (4) supported 95.33 million children (including 38.43 million girls)previously enrolled to return to school once the school system reopened; (5) trained 23 000 teachers to provide accelerated programs to mitigate learning loss during school closures; (6) equipped 14 000 schools with minimum hygiene standards for the prevention of COVID-19; and (7) supported 27 000 schools including 1.18 million teachers and education officials with reopening following the pandemic restrictions.
