Project Description
March 2023 – Since early February 2023 Türkiye and Syria have been impacted by multiple severe earthquakes that have resulted in over 40 000 deaths and significant damage to infrastructure. Overall it is estimated that 9.1 million people in Türkiye and 8.8 million in Syria have been directly affected by the earthquakes. Needs assessments have revealed vulnerable earthquake-affected populations require urgent access to shelter and food assistance water sanitation and hygiene services and healthcare. To respond to this crisis in a timely and effective manner Global Affairs Canada is matching $10 million of donations made to the Canadian Red Cross’ (CRC) Earthquake in Türkiye and Syria Appeal. The Matching Fund is addressing the life-saving needs of people affected by the earthquakes with funds being channeled by the CRC to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and its partners to undertake earthquake response activities. Project activities include: (1) addressing food security and nutrition needs; (2) distributing shelter and hygiene materials and other non-food items; and (3) providing health and protection services to earthquake-affected communities.
Expected Results
The expected outcome for this project include increased access to life-saving humanitarian assistance including food assistance protection shelter water sanitation and hygiene services for crisis-affected populations. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in communities experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
