Project Description
March 2016 – Despite a nationwide ceasefire agreement signed in October 2015 by the Government of Burma and various armed groups humanitarian needs persist in the country. Armed clashes continue to affect civilian populations in Kachin and northern Shan states while inter-communal tensions and violence persist in Rakhine state. Throughout Burma approximately 240 000 people remain displaced with many living in temporary shelters and almost all are entirely dependent on humanitarian assistance to meet their basic needs. With GAC’s support the Hope International Development Agency is increasing access to safe shelter and improved water hygiene and sanitation support for up to 12 627 internally displaced people in conflict-affected areas of Kachin State. Project activities include: (1) constructing 15 latrines; (2) providing safe drinking water through the construction of 3 water storage tanks; (3) constructing gender-segregated bathing spaces and hand-washing facilities; and (4) constructing up to 140 shelter units.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to safe and secure shelter; and (2) Increased access to safe drinking water and hygiene facilities. The expected intermediate outcome is reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people especially women and children.
