Project Description
This project seeks to improve Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and the equal enjoyment of sexual and reproductive rights for those experiencing poverty marginalization or vulnerability. Project activities include: (1) generating high-quality rigorous SRHR research directly relevant to policies and programs; (2) disseminating timely targeted information that is responsive to and impacts key stakeholders including governments donor agencies multilateral agencies international non-governmental organizations global professional associations journalists and researchers; (3) promoting effective policies and programs rooted in solid evidence in collaboration with strategic allies and partners globally; and (4) strengthening the capacity of researchers and advocates in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to undertake effective evidence-based SRHR communications. The project activities seek to advance SRHR globally and in LMICs by laying the groundwork for evidence-driven equitable policies and programs.
Expected Results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) Strengthened equal protection and promotion of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for those experiencing marginalization or vulnerability (including adolescents LGBTQI persons refugees and the poor) by governments donors multilateral organizations international non-governmental organizations professional associations journalists and researchers; and (2) Strengthened use of evidence on SRHR by advocacy organizations and researchers in low- and middle-income countries.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved as of June 2022 include: (1) broad dissemination of 150 country profiles featuring indicators from Adding It Up (an ongoing Guttmacher Institute study estimating the need for impact and cost of fully investing in sexual and reproductive health services) and the Guttmacher-World Health Organization study on abortion and unintended pregnancy worldwide; (2) the completion of major research deliverables (publications forthcoming) including a peer-reviewed article and commentary analyzing trends in abortion law change and abortion incidence as well as a scoping review on the impact of COVID-19 provision of and demand for abortion and contraceptive services in low- and middle-income countries; and (3) numerous capacity-building workshops for medical professionals advocates journalists researchers and other stakeholders to increase the use of sexual reproductive health and rights evidence for policy and program impact.
