Project Description
This project seeks to increase the capacity of Georgia to detect and deter the smuggling of nuclear or radiological materials. Specifically it supports Georgian security agencies with securing checkpoints established along the administrative lines of control with Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Project activities include: (1) providing radiation detection communication surveillance and inspection equipment to Georgian security agencies; and (2) providing related operational and maintenance training on the equipment.
Expected Results
The expected outcome of this project includes improved detection and response to nuclear or radiological security incidents by Georgian security agencies at key administrative lines of control.
Progress & Results Achieved
Results achieved at the end of the project (August 2024) include: (1) delivered nuclear and radioactive detection devices and ancillary equipment. This includes portable radiation detection equipment radioisotope identification devices binoculars and vehicle inspection kits; and (2) provided operational and maintenance training to Georgian Criminal Police and Special Tasks Department along the South Ossetia and Abkhazia administrative lines of control.
